July 18, 2014: After speculation earlier this week that Microsoft planned to layoff an unprecedented 6,000 employees, confirmation has returned that the estimations were off by more than double the original tally, at 18,000. This includes the entire Xbox Entertainment Division which Microsoft focused heavily on during the Xbox One reveal in 2013, and the 2013 E3 presentation.
Microsoft acquired Nokia last autumn and promised to cut the company’s costs by 600 million dollars in yearly expenses. Analysts all agreed that massive layoffs were to be expected. Areas with overlap such as engineering and customer service were anticipated to be divided and cut. Following the Nokia procurement, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella exceeded all expectations and plans to cut 50% of the employees who had been caught in the capitalist crossfire.
